Contract/In-House Training Testimonials

Submitted 5/18/2010 by Sergeant Preston Allyn - Seminole County Sheriff's Office:

Our time-line was tight and our budget even tighter. Our new direct supervision unit was under construction and we identified several areas of training that our staff needed. We could not find a single course to meet all our needs and could not afford to send everyone who needed training out of town to various courses. The AJA Training Department had a perfect solution. Director Connie Lacy, Coordinator Steve Kendall, and Instructor Rob Green worked with our Transition Team to develop customized training. Our customized course was called, “Direct Supervision, Transition, & Leadership: The Dynamics of a New Ideology.” AJA came to our facility and trained 48 staff members in a 3-day course. In my 20 years at our jail, Seminole County John E. Polk Correctional Facility, I have never witnessed such enthusiasm, focus, and cohesive team work from our staff. AJA provided exactly what we needed, when we needed it, and at a price we could afford. Our uncommon success is due to our partnership with AJA's dedicated team of professionals. Thank you all!

Submitted 3/8/2011 by  Michael Maurizi, Executive Officer, Firearms and Tactics Unit - NYC Correction Department:

Warden Robert Green,
I wanted to say thank-you for the training you provided to myself and my colleagues last week.  In my 24+ years with the Department, I have been to my share of training sessions, seminars, courses, etc, and yours ranks up there with the best of them.  It is refreshing to have a presenter who has walked in our shoes, and who knows intimately the difficult challenges that are unique to our aspect of law enforcement.

Co-host Opportunities

Cohosting an AJA seminar provides many jails with the opportunity to offer quality, professional training to their staff, even when faced with budgetary constraints and inadequate staffing.  Generally, the cohost agency can expect to receive one complimentary tuition for every five students registered for the seminar.  The actual number of complimentary tuitions awarded may be limited by space constraints, depending on the number of students who register from other agencies.  In most cases, the minimum number of complimentary tuitions awarded will be three.  Certain courses have limited seating and may only be able to accommodate two complimentary tuitions.  AJA training staff will notify you as to the number of complimentary tuitions you can expect to receive for the particular program you are cohosting.  The complimentary tuitions can be given to individuals of the cohost agency’s choice.

Following is information regarding the division of responsibilities between the American Jail Association and the cohost agency/organization:

AJA will be responsible for:

  1. Announcing the seminar nationally in the following ways: a) AJA’s training calendar, b) a brochure which will be mailed to all AJA members and U.S. jails, c) American Jails magazine, and d) AJA’s web site.

  2. Collecting participant registration fees and maintaining a participant registration list.

  3. Negotiating a contract with a local hotel suitable to house the participants and conduct the training.

  4. Providing expert instructors to conduct the training; including instructor fees, lodging, per diem, and administrative and clerical costs.

  5. Providing class handouts, agendas, name badges, participant lists, supplemental training materials, and participant certificates of attendance.

The Cohost Agency/Organization will be responsible for:

  1. Providing audio/visual equipment.

  2. Assigning an individual as an on-site coordinator.

  3. Allowing the use of cohost agency’s name for promotional purposes.

  4. Hosting a tour of the cohost agency’s jail and providing transportation to and from the jail for the class participants.  The tour will most likely be scheduled from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Tuesday evening.

  5. Assisting with the distribution of seminar information in your area.

AJA reserves the right to cancel a cohost seminar if the pre-determined number of students (usually 15) has not enrolled within 30 days of the start of the program.

For consideration, please submit the attached form to Connie Lacy.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Continuing education units for American Jail Association seminar participants are being awarded through Fort Hays State University (FHSU). Participants must apply for CEUs using this form. Payment of $15.00 must accompany the form.

Fort Hays State University will award one (1) credit for every 2 hours of training.  For example:

  • 8 hours of training = 4 CEUs
  • 16 hours of training = 8 CEUs
  • 24 hours of training = 12 CEUs
  • 32 hours of training = 16 CEUs
  • 40 hours of training = 20 CEUs

The awarding of CEUs will be governed by FHSU policy. Such policy provides, among other things, that one (1) CEU will be awarded for every 2 hours of attendance. FHSU will put qualified registrants in the University registrar’s database. Students will receive a certificate from FHSU listing the number of CEUs awarded for the seminar.
