Jail Manager Certification Commission
Appointed by the Board of Directors of the American Jail Association (AJA), a five-member Jail Manager Certification Commission (JMCC) administers the CJM program, sets policy, and assures the program reflects the changing needs of the profession. Members of the Commission function under the direction of their Chair and the Chair is accountable to the Board through the Executive Director for the accomplishment of the Commission's mission. The Commission consists of the Chair, the Vice Chair, and three members.

Service on the JMCC
Service on the Commission is a five-year term. Each year at AJA's Annual Training Conference & Jail Expo, the current JMCC Chair will conclude his/her duties on the Commission. The fifth-year commissioner will become the Chair and the fourth-year commissioner will become the Vice Chair. The AJA Board of Directors will appoint a new Commission member to fill the vacancy created by this rotation. The official duties of the new Commission member will commence at AJA's Annual Conference.
To be eligible to serve on the JMCC, the applicant must be:

a Certified Jail Manager, |
| b) |
an American Jail Association individual member
in good standing, |
| c) |
currently employed full-time as a paid jail
manager as defined in the CJM Handbook for Candidates. |
Responsibilities of JMCC members include:
| a) |
evaluation of CJM Applications & Experiential
Background Forms and CJM Recertification Applications periodically throughout
the year, |
| b) |
reporting the determination(s) of candidate
applications to the JMCC Chair, |
| c) |
attending an Examination Item Review Session*
as a 1st year Commission member, |
| d) |
attending an annual CJM Test Review Session*
and an annual JMCC meeting at AJA's Conference, |
| e) |
participating in the CJM workshop at AJA's
Annual Training Conference & Jail Expo, |
| f) |
Assisting the AJA Board of Directors with the
selection of a new JMCC member annually by reviewing letters of interest
and selecting candidates for appointment by the Board, |
| g) |
Actively participating in the promotional aspects
of the CJM program which may include attending state, regional, and national
conferences as needed, |
| h) |
Other responsibilities as the necessity arises |
*Any travel required of a Commissioner at the request of AJA (other than AJA's Annual Training Conference & Jail Expo) will be arranged by AJA and reimbursement will be made for reasonable, necessary, and allowable expenses incurred while performing official duties on behalf of the JMCC.
Applicants should send a letter of expressed interest to include:
- Professional and educational background
- Current impressions of the CJM program
- Vision for future growth of the program
Consideration shall be given to affirmative action, geography, agency size, and previous representation on the JMCC so that the Commission reflects the diversity of the field.
Applications will be accepted by AJA Headquarters until
February 2, 2010 for the next available vacancy. Applications received after
February 2, 2010 will not be considered.
The JMCC will review submitted letters of interest and vote for up to four candidates. This applicant pool will be forwarded to the AJA Executive Director who will forward the letters of interest from the individuals in the final applicant pool of four to the Board of Directors. The AJA Board of Directors will appoint one candidate to fill the JMCC vacancy.
Service on the Jail Manager Certification Commission requires a high level of dedication. The evaluation of CJM Applications & Experiential Background Forms and CJM Recertification Applications necessitates the ability to manage significant work loads and the ability to meet deadlines. It is also important that the applicant regularly attends AJA's Annual Training Conference & Jail Expo.
The JMCC is comprised of highly motivated corrections professionals who are committed to enhancing the profession of jail management. Participation on the Commission demonstrates an individual's commitment to the professional growth of the field of corrections. As a member of the Jail Manager Certification Commission, you will be an ambassador for the advancement of corrections professionals.
